Background:
  PROFILE OF PROFESSOR ANTHONY KAYODE ONIFADE Professor Anthony Kayode Onifade hails from Ekan in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State. After completing his Primary education at St. James’s Roman Catholic Mission Primary School in Ilorin, he proceeded to Bishop Smith Memorial College, Ilorin for his Secondary education. By 1983, he was admitted into Ondo State University (now Ekiti State University) Ado-Ekiti, where he graduated in 1987 as the overall best student in the B.Sc class of Botany Department. The young man was enlisted for NYSC in August 1987, and deployed for primary assignment at Command Day Secondary School, 23rd Armoured Brigade Bauchi, where he taught Biology and Agricultural Science to the Senior Secondary 3 students. He later proceeded to the University of Ibadan and graduated with the overall best result in the M.Sc class of the Department of Agricultural Biology (now Crop Protection and Environmental Biology), having scored a CGPA of 74.1% in 1992. It is remarkable to note that Anthony Kayode Onifade obtained his Ph.D degree in Microbiology from the University of Ilorin after two and a half years of hard work in 1998. Prof Onifade was appointed Graduate Assistant in the Department of Botany, Ekiti State University Ado-Ekiti in 1989, and rose through the ranks to Lecturer 1 in 1997. He later joined the services of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) as Lecturer 1 in 1999 and was reappointed Senior Lecturer the following year. He was promoted Reader in 2004 and then rose to the grade of Professor in October, 2007. Since he joined FUTA, he has held several administrative positions. He was the Postgraduate Coordinator (1999 - 2002), Head of Department of Microbiology for two terms (2002 - 2003 and 2009 - 2012), a member of the University Senate, member of Appointments and Promotions Committee, as well as Chairman and member of many University's committees. He was also Professor on sabbatical and Head of Microbiology Department at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko Ondo State in 2012/2013 academic session. Prof. Onifade has participated in both national and international conferences and workshops on phytopathology, phytotherapy and electron microscopy. He has designed and successfully supervised many students at the Postgraduate Diploma, Master's and Doctoral levels in his chosen field. A prolific researcher, Professor Onifade has authored ninety-eight (98) scholarly publications in local and international journals of repute. Through intensive research, Prof Onifade secured a patent while undergoing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman in 2004. Prof Onifade has performed creditably as the pioneer National Secretary of Mycological Society of Nigeria since its formal inauguration in 2006 to date. He is also a member of various learned societies both onshore and offshore. He is a fellow of Mycological Society of Nigeria, Fellow of the Institute for Natural Resources and Human Development and a member of Editorial Board of many international and local journals. He has served as undergraduate and postgraduate external examiner, professorial external assessor, as well as consultant on appointment of academic staff in many Nigerian Universities. Prof Onifade delivered the 57th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, on Tuesday 16th February, 2010. He is happily married and blessed with children.
