Background Professor Anthony Kayode Onifade hails from Ekan-Nla in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. After completing his Primary education at St. James’s RCM Primary School Ilorin, he proceeded to Bishop Smith Memorial College, Ilorin for his Secondary education. In November 1983, he was admitted into Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado Ekiti (Now known as Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti) and came off with flying colours in 1987. He later attended the University of Ibadan where he graduated with the overall best result in M.Sc. Agricultural Biology (Plant Pathology). He also earned his Ph.D degree in Microbiology (Plant Pathology) from the University of Ilorin after two and a half years of work in 1998. Professor A. K. Onifade joined the services of the Federal University of Technology, Akure as Lecturer 1 on 1st July, 1999 and was reappointed Senior Lecturer the following year. He was promoted Reader in October, 2004 and then rose to the rank of Professor in October, 2007. Since he joined the University, he had held several administrative positions, including Head of Department of Microbiology in 2002 - 2003 and 2009 - 2012. Prof. Onifade has participated in both national and international conferences and workshops on phytopathology, phytotherapy and electron microscopy. He is very active as a plant pathologist (mycologist and nematologist), especially in the control of foliar and soil borne diseases of economic crops. A prolific researcher, Professor Onifade has authored over eighty scientific papers on the subject in local and international journals of repute, in addition to a chapter in a book. Through intensive research, Prof Onifade secured a patent while undergoing a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Chemistry, Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman in 2003-2004. He has been the Secretary General of Mycological Society of Nigeria (an arm of the British Mycological Society) since 2006 and a member of various learned societies, including the American Society for Microbiology, New York Academy of Sciences, African Society for Nematologists, Nigerian Society for Microbiology, Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria, and Nigerian Society for Plant protection. He has served as undergraduate and postgraduate external examiner, as well as consultant on appointment of academic staff in many Nigerian Universities. He has designed and successfully supervised many graduate students at masters and doctoral levels. Prof. Onifade enjoys travelling and singing during his leisure. He is successfully married with children.
